Peace and pacifism

F Joseph Smith

pp. 85-100

In his monograph on the idea of peace and pacifism Max Scheler broaches the question of peace as an idea capable of realization. In doing so he cites the various types of pacifism, from heroic through Christian, economic-liberal, juridical, Marxist, imperialist and cultural conceptualizations. He ends with a prophetic challenge to our era. In this contribution we shall improvise on relevant themes from Scheler's treatise, commenting on them in terms of our own situation as well as of history1.
