Introduction/initiation

pp. 1-9

The more the peoples of the world connect with each other, the more they become aware of their differences, and also the more they become aware of what they have in common. The same can be said about individual human beings. The more they connect with each other, the more they become aware not only of their differences but also of what they have in common. Whether as a people or as individuals, connectivity is not juxtapositional and, likewise, awareness is not juxtapositional. Awareness brings into being what a people are and what an individual is. In and by bringing into being, it illuminates what it brings into being. Awareness is illumination. This is precisely what an African drum calls to our attention. This is what the drum drums, provided that we do not stand in its way. To stand in its way is to stand in the way of our being, and it is also to stand in the way of the being of everything that is.
